Radioactivity found in Indian steel import

The German authorities have detected radioactivity in steel products, contaminated by cobalt 60, export from India to Germany. The first discoveries occurred back in August 2008 and Germany was not only a country found the contaminated product but also Netherlands, Sweden and France.

According to local media reports, radioactive steel scrap reaches India often from defunct nuclear plants in Russia or the USA. The German federal environment ministry said it has appeal to the Indian authority and the relevant Indian authorities asked for the support to control the material.
