Vale's Q2 iron ore output up 23%

Vale's iron ore output continued to recover, rising 23% quarter-on-quarter to 57.7 million tonnes in the three months ending June.

However, output remained 26% lower year-on-year, taking first-half output to just 96.7 million tonnes, down 29% year-on-year.Iron ore output at Vale's main Carajás operations suffered in the June quarter due to unusually heavy rains, but managed to keep at 20.5 million tonnes, slightly above the previous quarter.

Carajás product made up 35.5% of Vale's total production in the quarter, up from 29.8% in June quarter last year.Vale's pellet output in the June quarter also rose, increasing 47% from the previous quarter to 4.25 million tonnes.

However, output remained 63% lower year-on-year as Vale kept just four operations out of nine running: Tubarão I and II, Nibrasco, Vargem Grande and Samarco.First-half pellet output fell 68% year-on-year to just 7.58 million tonnes.

However, given the recovery in global demand, Vale has resumed operations at the Itabrasco plant, while Samarco is ramping up its new third plant.Still, Vale said it expects the recovery pace at its operations to slow down in the second half.
